The Basics of learning Blackjack

Blackjack is a traditional casino table game that is available almost in all online casinos. The basic aim of a player in blackjack is to score a total sum of 21 with your cards – without going over – and having the least amount of cards possible. The player not only needs to beat the other players with their combination of cards, but their hand must also beat the dealer's. Blackjack isn't just a game of luck, either – there are skills required to play this game and win; however, luck is always helpful!

The object of blackjack is getting a card total as close to 21 as possible that beats the dealer’s card value. Going over 21 is called going “bust.”

Picture cards have a value of ten and the number cards have their relevant value of the card. Aces can have a value of either 1 or 11 depending on which is more advantageous to you.

You begin by placing your bet; the dealer then deals the first card face down to all of the players. Cards are dealt one at a time.

The player acts first and if he busts before the dealer does he loses regardless of whether the dealer busts or not. You signal the dealer by saying hit me after the dealer has dealt 2 cards to you. That is whenever you want another card. Stand is the term used when you have decided to stop receiving more cards.

There are a number of terms you should be familiar with before you begin playing blackjack:

  1. Split is the term used when you have received 2 cards of the same value and you would like to split these cards into two separate hands. Some casinos allow you to split a hand three times which effectively gives you four hands to play at one time. Check with your dealer before you begin playing.
  2. Double down is the term used when you wish to double your bet at the table.
  3. A push occurs when both yours and the dealer’s hand have the same value and neither wins.
  4. A hole card is the card that is first dealt to you upside down or face down.

The dealer’s cards must reach a total of 17 before he is allowed to stand. Knowing this can be to your advantage.

Card counting is a method of mentally keeping track of what cards have been dealt in the game and what cards are remaining in the deck. This can help you even up the score in the game. The odds can improve by a certain percentage, giving you almost equal odds to the house. You need to be accurate in your ability to count cards especially when there are a lot of distractions around you.

Taking out insurance is another way of helping you when the dealer’s card is an ace and the chances are high that he will hit blackjack. You can take out insurance and get 2:1 for this bet thereby receiving your original stake back. Beware of taking insurance because the dealer receives an advantage if you do.

Remember to read up about the game and practice as much as possible. Online casinos usually allow you to play for free and many of them have tutorials that will help hone your skills at blackjack.
